Who Do You Worship?

To whom will you place your worship? When I say worship, the majority of people will automatically think about worshiping some sort of deity. Which, in the end, is true. However, at its very base, worship simply means who you choose to listen to and follow.

Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

We were designed to worship. The only question is to whom your worship belongs. Even Atheists are designed, just like the rest of us, in the same way. The difference is that they worship themselves.

For the unbeliever and the lukewarm Christian, the god of their lives is themselves. Which, consequently, is breaking Commandment #1.

Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

Even if someone chooses to not follow and obey God because they do no believe in Him, the truth of the matter is that their worship is going somewhere because we are all hardwired to worship. We can’t help but to worship.

So, do you worship money? Do you worship attention? Do you worship validation? Do you worship “success”? Do you worship TV, movies, or music? Do you worship your phone? Do you worship makeup, jewelry, or your looks?

You see, where you place your attention and time is very telling about where your loyalty belongs.

If you spend your time conversing about God and His Word, if you spend your time and attention reading and studying His Word, and if you dedicate yourself to obeying the Lord, then your worship belongs to Him.

However, if your time, energy, and attention is toward worldly things, then you worship the world, regardless of what your lips profess.

Matthew 15:8 “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

And if your worship is in the world, then you are spending your finite amount of time chasing after ashes.

1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

James 4:4 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

I beg you, choose the Lord Jesus Christ to follow and emulate. Reject the world and its temporary pleasures. Choose the One who suffered and died for you, and is alive again. Only He can give you real purpose, real love, and a very real reward.

Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
