There are people in this world who are so poor that all they have is money.
1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
Money is not evil in itself: it is amoral. It is the LOVE (obsession, pursuit) of money that is the root of all evil. It may be alright to have what money can buy if the person does not lose what money cannot buy. “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
1 Samuel 2:7 “The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.”
1 Chronicles 29:12 “Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.”
Wealth is not a sin. Abraham, Job, and Solomon were fantastically wealthy. The problem comes when the heart is set upon wealth.
As it has been said before, when you are blessed to have more money, build a longer table, not a taller wall.
1 timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
The love of money ignores true gain.
Philippians 4:11-13 “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
There is so much more that can be said, and that has been written in the Word, about the love of money. I will end it with this …
1 Timothy 6:7 “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”
The love of money focuses on the temporal.
Job 1:21 “And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
In this life, make certain that your soul gains more than your bank account. Ensure that you pursue the riches of the righteousness of Jesus Christ more than you pursue anything else. At the end, every dollar we have is just Monopoly money with no eternal benefit.
